Samuel of Chowan?s son, William, died about a year after his father?his will is dated February 18, 1762. William named his wife, Elizabeth, and their youngest son, Samuel, who was not of age at the writing of the will, and who was to be cared for by William?s brother, Abraham. Once he came of age, William?s son, Samuel, was to inherit the family plantation. In his will, William also made reference to his ?other Children.? Orrin indicated that he had found a copy of the estate settlement papers for William Harrell, presented at the October term of 1766, in which four other children were named: Henry, Abner, Ruth, and Abselah.

Samuel of Chowan left his son, Abraham, the plantation he was already living on in 1761. In 1762, Abraham was given the responsibility of caring for his brother, William?s, youngest son, Samuel. Making him "Uncle Abraham" to William.

In his 1761 will, Samuel Chowan gave his son, William, title to the land he was already living on. William apparently passed this land on to his youngest son, Samuel (born around 1760). William wrote his will on February 18, 1762, and in it he named his wife, Elizabeth, and youngest son, Samuel. His plantation was to be used by his wife, and then go to his son, Samuel. If Samuel was not of age, William wanted his brother, Abraham, to care for his youngest son until he was of age. William?s estate settlement was presented at the October Term, 1766, in Chowan County Court, and provided the names of his older children. They were Henry, Abner, Ruth, and Abselah. I do not think all of his older children were of age in 1762, but it is possible.

John HARRELL Sr. "of Nansemond Co" [Parents] was born about 1665 in Nansemond County, Virginia.

I believe the first John Harrell to purchase land in North Carolina was John of Nansemond County, Virginia. He probably was the John who bought 150 acres in Tyrrell County in October of 1715. The land was on the south side of Albemarle Sound, only about 30 miles east of where numerous Harrells would begin settling a few years later over on the north side of the Roanoke River in Bertie County.

One of the more intriguing features of the 1741 deed from John to his brother James is the joint appearance of  Christopher Harrell and Henry Harrell as witnesses. This was the first time the names of Christopher and Henry Harrell appeared together in North Carolina documents. They had appeared together in 1678, when the two boys came from Bristol, England to work as contract labor in Northampton County, Virginia for 8 and 10 years respectively. If they were the same Christopher and Henry, they would have probably been in their late 70s or early 80s when they witnessed the 1741 deed.

We should consider the possibility that James and John, the sons of Richard of Nansemond County, were the grandsons of either Christopher or Henry. (Also keep in mind, Abraham had a son named Christopher, and Edward had a son named Henry?they all lived in the same area, and were of age before 1755, but not necessarily before 1741.)

He had the following children.
