Joseph H. HARRELL (Heral). Joseph married Mary Jane ROBERTS.

My ggrandfather, Joseph H. Heral and his wife, Mary Jane Roberts, received a 400 acre farm from her father when they were married. The farm was located on Rattle Creek and the North Fork Holston River. There was a large river bottom and some higher land suitable for farming. High on a hill above the bottom was a natural lake of about 3 or four acres fed by springs. Over a high ridge, there was a large hollow or sinkhole surrounded by the hills. It was cultivated and grew good crops. At the lower side of the sinkhole there is a large cave into which the water drained when rains came. They called it "cave hollow". The rougher hills were cleared and made into pasture land where sheep and cattle grazed.
There was much virgin timber on the farm and my greatgrandfather set about cutting it. His father in law, Henry Roberts, operated a sawmill at Greendale, Va. a few miles away. Above the river bottom land the river ran wild over the rapids along wild water cliff which extended vertically several hundred from the waters edge. Once when they were dragging logs from the hill above the cliff a large log started rolling toward the cliff and carried the team of horses over the cliff and onto the rocks at the rivers edge, killing both of them.. I have walked along the top of wild water cliff and heard the roar of the river below, believe me it's a bit frightening.. My grandfther, Milton H. Heral (Hearl) inherited the farm and also farmed it until his death, however, he wasn't too interested in farm work and often worked for large timbering operations in West Virginia, leaving the older boys and tenents to work the crops.
