Long-time doctor in Ocala dies

Dr. Henry Lytle Harrell Sr., 94, a retired physician and community activist, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at New Horizons Rehabilitation Center.

"He was a super, wonderful gentlemen, a guiding light," said Parnell Townley, chairman of the Marion County Commission. He said they first met in 1988 when Townley was running for political office.

"I liked to have discussions with him, he was so solid," Townley said. "You know, he went to Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Up until a few years ago he loved to go salt water fishing on weekends."

The new building for the Boys and Girls Club of Marion County is named after Harrell Sr.

"He put together much of the funding for the building, he was very active in the Boys and Girls Club," Townley said.

A native of Woodbury, Tennessee, he moved to Ocala in 1939 and was a general practitioner in the city from 1939 to 1984.

"He started back in the days when general practitioners did everything, from orthopedics to delivering babies. He delivered most of the babies before they had obstetricians here," said his oldest daughter, Elaine McConnaughhay of Tallahassee.

"Mom was office manager and his nurse, we grew up as a medical family," she said. "Four out of the six children ended up in the medical field."

Harrell served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1941 to 1945.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ocala. Harrell was a member of the original Committee of Seventeen that organized Blue Cross-Blue Shield in Florida, and was charter chairman of the board at Marion Community Hospital. He organized the first volunteer clinic to treat the indigent in Marion County.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Allen Harrell, Ocala; sons, James A. Harrell, Silver Springs, Md., Dr. Henry L. Harrell Jr., Ocala and Dr. Frank W. Harrell, Louisville, Ky.; daughters, Elaine McConnaughhay and Martha Lynn Chumbler, Tallahassee and Susan Robinson of Columbia, Mo.; and sister, Leora McPherson, Nashville; 15 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

"He was a wonderful father to all of us in-laws too, he took us all in," said Linda Harrell, daughter-in-law and wife of Dr. Henry L. Harrell Jr. "I think for his children and for his community he was a great role model."

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Marion County.
