MATTHEW JAMES HARRELL (1859 -1930)
Matthew James Harrell was bom March 13, 1859, in Brooks County, Georgia, a son of Samuel James Harrell,
CSA, and Laura Jane Allbritton, daughter of George Washington Allbritton, CSA, and Jane Alien Allbritton.
Mr. Harrell was first married to Annie Olivia Winter, daughter of Jeremiah Winter and Sarah Elizabeth Boring,
daughter of Thomas E. Boring and Martha Lenoa, on March 12,1879. Annie Winter Harrell wasbomin 1861 and
in 1880 was joined in death by a baby daughter. They are buried in the Dixie Cemetery.
Mr. Harrell married Adelaide Eliza Groover, daughter of Thomas Alfred Groover and Susan Joiner, February 10,
1884. There were eight children bom to Mr. Harrell and his second wife:
1. Hansell Bennett Harrell (bom January 9,1885) married Manira Estelle Austin, daughter of George
Washington Austin and Julia Josephine Benton, on November 5,1914.
2. Walter Ralston Harrell (b. April 14,1887) married Lucia Dena Butts on May 5,1914.
3. Samuel Thomas Harrell (b. December 15, 1889) married Blanch Walker on May 21,1913.
4. Annie Laurie Harrell (b. September 20,1891) married Walter David Long on January 21,1913.
5. Ida Olivia Harrell (December 18,1893 - September 27, 1909).
6. Matthew James Harrell Jr. (b. July 3,1897) marriedMargaret Waters.
7. Alma Marie Harrell (October 22,1900 - January 8,1954) never married.
8. Wallace Eugene Harrell (b. September 9, 1902) married Bemadine Henderson.
Mr. M. J. Harrell Sr. was a prominent and successful farmer in Brooks County. He began with 75 acres of land,
of which only 15 acres were in cultivation. He bought and sold several fine farms at various times. His homeplace
property, consisting of nearly 1000 acres of fine farm, pasture, and timber land was located on the Quitman-
Grooverville road, four miles out from Quitman. The last ten years of the married life of Mr. and Mrs. Harrell were
spent in Quitman.
Mr. Harrell was a self-made man. He was energetic and aggressive by nature. He was a strong disciplinarian, but
his children all adored him. He gave a college eduation to all his children who wanted one. He was a member of the
Hickory Head Agricultural Club. He was among the first to acquire any new farm machinery.
In the early 1900s, Mr. M. J. Harrell owned the Hotel Marie located in downtown Quitman. Mr. Harrell died
September 3,1930. Adelaide Groover Harrell died January 28,1926. They are both buried in the Groover Cemetery, a
few miles from Dixie.
